Do Pony Riders Need To Be Fit

By Heather Toms

If you're under the impression it is just your pony that has to be mentally and physically, not to mention emotionally fit, then you have got another thing coming. You've got to keep up your part of the bargain, as well , and this obviously includes your own fitness. When you are in first-class condition, it implies less weight for your horse. When you're physically well coordinated, you are able to jell better with your pony and that means you are causing him less strain. You don't need to be at Olympic professional levels of fitness, but certainly your horse will appreciate your being trim and at optimum weight. The secret, naturally, is to eat healthy, sleep long enough and exercise regularly.

When coaching your pony, you have got to keep your mind uncluttered. You must be absolutely aware of what coaching is to be done, what's the right way to train your horse and the way to plan your coaching schedules. You must be alert to unexpected situations that may arise, even something like your horse failing to respond to you correctly, and you must have your plans ready. You should evaluate your training sessions occasionally and catch up on areas where your pony is lagging. You need to touch base with others, horse riding buddies, trainers, professionals, and analyse things with them occasionally.

You need emotional fitness so you can participate with full concentration in your pony coaching activities. You've got to be alert mentally and open to your horse's communications. You should stay confident and positive, because your lack of alertness or negativism of mood will rub off on your pony. He can communicate his needs and any pain or discomfort he is feeling generally thru non-oral ways , using body language and you have to be tuned in. When your pony fails to perform how you want him to, you stay patient and don't lose your cool. It is a saying with horses that the soft but firm approach always works better than the cruel approach.

By showing your alertness and sense of participation to your pony, you are encouraging him. By showing him you're an able leader, you are working on his herd instincts: he's a horse, and horses need leaders. They give unquestioning obedience and faithfulness to those they recognise as leaders.

Don't think , therefore , that you can operate on autopilot and your pony does all of the difficult work. He may do the carrying, but you help in keeping his load minimum. You easy his way, you ensure he rides right. You're a passenger in a very limited sense of the word; you're also guide, trainer, leader mentor and chum. And to maintain all those roles, you better be fit.
