How The Correct MMA Sparring Gloves Can Assist You In Your Training

By John MacKintosh

For those who have never heard of it the acronym MMA stands for Mixed Martial Arts. It is a full contact sport where the disciplines of various martial arts techniques are used to punch and kick an opponent. The original thought was to pit various martial arts against one another in the hope of finding the most effective one in an unarmed combat scenario. Many people around the world enjoy this sport, and take great care when choosing their equipment, especially their MMA sparring gloves.

MMA competitions were introduced into the United States in 1993 with the first Ultimate Fighting Championship. It gained exposure and popularity when a Jiu Jitsu fighter named Royce Gracie won the first tournament. The interest in martial arts saw a distinct increase. Some also say that the father of MMA is none other than Bruce Lee, who believed that the best fighter was one who could adapt to any style.

Originally it was just professional fighters who became involved with MMA. Thanks to the ever increasing popularity of the sport, it is possible to find that it is being taught in more and more venues. Any member of the public can now train like their MMA idol.

Sparring is going to be just one element of your training, and so you are going to need some sparring gloves. As they come in a variety of weights and styles, it is no easy matter trying to decide which are right for you. The main thing to bear in mind is that they are used to prevent injury to both yourself, and your partner.

Sometimes the best thing to do is take a look round your MMA training club, and take note of what others are wearing. Ask their advice, maybe why they prefer that glove over another. Find out how long they have had them, how often they have been using them in that time, this way you can gauge the durability of the glove.

They should fit snugly in all of the right places, have plenty of padding in the knuckle area, but most importantly they should feel secure. A pair that are going to slip and slide as your hands begin to sweat are not going to be much use to you. For many mail order is the way to go, which is all well and good if you know the brand and product.

Just like a new pair of boots, to begin with, your new MMA sparring gloves are going to feel very stiff, and so are going to need breaking in. It will probably be most noticeable in the finger and thumb loop areas. Many will try and tell you various short cuts about how to break them in, but the best way is through use.
