Sailing And Safety Tips For Power Catamaran

By Sharlene Fleming

It is usually a good thing for people to have hobbies. One of the best hobbies that a person can get used to is sailing in a power catamaran. This might be a dangerous hobbies for some people. That is why it is necessary to learn some safety measures. First off, he needs to know how his boat's control lines work so that he can sail as safe as possible.

The mast should be sealed properly. If he can, he should take it down to his local lake and then drop it down to the shallow water. If he can find traces of leaks there, he should then proceed into sealing it. Sealing the mast is very important if he wants to be safe while he is sailing in rough waters.

Also, remember to learn what the properties of sailing the boat are. This means that he has to learn how to steer by the sails on his own. He should also get to know the feeling of jybing and tacking. Aside from that, he should also know how to boat will rock if there are more people on board. Learn how to flatten the sails so that he can get an idea on what will happen if the boat gets de-powered.

It is highly recommended that he flip his boat purposely. No matter how careful a person is, the boat flipping will definitely happen sooner or later. If this is the case, then he is better off getting prepared for it and practicing. He should not be ashamed of getting knocked down since this is an experience that he should not miss while sailing.

Avoid inviting anyone to board the boat if he is not sure that they have an idea of the sailing safety measures. If they do not know these, he should take it upon himself to instruct them about the emergency procedures to take in case something unexpected happens. This is the best way to avoid accidents and injuries.

The PFD is one of the things that the person should own. He should wear this at all times while he is sailing. This fact goes the same with his friends who will be going with him on his sail boat. This is so that he can avoid getting run over by the boat. The PFD is important even if they are just drifting.

An airhorn is very necessary when it comes to sailing. Therefore, it is a good recommendation to follow to carry the said item aboard. It should be an airhorn that is quick to grab. This is necessary in case someone in the crew gets thrown overboard and they does cannot see the boat anymore. Relying on the sense of hearing is another option, after all.

There should also be a pair of Sea-Snips in the strap of his PFD. The Sea-Snips is considered to be EMT scissors. It is required that the said scissors are in the strap of the PFD since this is very crucial when it comes to letting himself free in case he fell overboard and his hook lines get tangled.

If the power catamaran boat is sailing far away from the shore, it is always a good idea to carry a submersible radio. A handheld VHF one would be a good choice. This way, he can ask for assistance to nearby boats when he is in an emergency.
